Measurable Success in Metrics

In a data-driven world, businesses measure their success with key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics for executives and employees. Access to this data is critical for understanding how the business is performing. For this leader in retail manufacturing, success can be measured by performance in the marketplace, employee progress toward performance goals, and whether production keeps up with demand and maintains product quality. They recognized the importance of making performance data easy to access and relied on Power BI to store all their datasets.

However, they did not have a centralized, easy-to-access dashboard that executives could use on a daily basis, which made it difficult to get a clear and consistent view of business performance across teams.

The Solution

Intentional Design in Mind

With the goal of helping users quickly understand their business’s successes and setbacks, the team set out to integrate Power BI into a mobile application built with Volt MX. The intention was to deliver a familiar design to the team for quick and easy adoption across the business. This retail manufacturer tapped into the knowledge base and expertise of the HCL Services Team. Working closely with company representatives, HCL’s Services team of designers, developers, engineers, and mobile architects quickly built an app for tablets and mobile devices that employees can use anytime, anywhere.

The application was developed as a native mobile application for both iOS and Android devices, including phones and tablets. The project began with a single dashboard and expanded over a 20-month period to include multiple dashboards and integrations across business systems.

The HCL Service Team transformed the company’s business data into a mobile-friendly experience, enabling brands and their respective areas of focus (sales, revenue, shipments, production, forecasts, etc.) to be filtered and accessed as needed. This top manufacturer has named Volt MX and the HCL Service Team as invaluable resources and crucial to the company’s ability to measure success.

The platform was deployed on Azure, with the customer managing the environment internally, while HCL Services supported discovery, blueprinting, and development. Designs followed familiar patterns, including Material Design and layouts similar to Power BI, and were delivered through Figma to keep teams aligned throughout development. App distribution and management were supported through Mobile Device Management (MDM), App Center for build and testing workflows and MaaS360 for device and security management.

The Results

Easily Adoptable Innovation

Using an innovation budget, the company enabled its global manufacturing teams to adopt mobile analytics with Volt MX. In a record-breaking three months, the team launched the mobile infrastructure and the first version of the app with zero critical bugs, infrastructure issues or application crashes.

Upgrades on the app have continued on a regular basis with new mobile dashboards, KPIs and other content packaged in an intuitive and clean UI that executives and business leaders rely on daily. The app was designed to surface company news and updates directly to users. It allows data taxonomy to narrow down to product brands, categories, KPIs, geographies, etc.; anything that can be done and viewable via Power BI is available in the mobile app.

Over time, the app evolved into a broader internal platform used daily by executives and business leaders to access critical insights and make timely decisions.

Within six months, the total user base grew from the initial 80 executive users to more than 400 users in Sales, Finance, PSO, and Marketing. Today, usage is approaching 500 internal users, including C-level executives who rely on the app every day. The Daily Briefings app delivers KPIs and metrics quickly, helping teams measure performance and make informed decisions based on timely data.

The expansion beyond the initial executive audience helped drive broader adoption across departments and improved access to timely, actionable insights across the organization.
